An Easy Old Fashioned Recipe

Awards season is fully upon us and it’s the perfect excuse to celebrate with friends, I love everything about award ceremonies from getting excited over the red carpet looks to the tension over which film is going to win. But my favourite thing is taking the time to watch with friends and family, when I was younger my mum, my sister and I used to dress up and watch the Oscars, it was so much fun and I’m planning to do the same thing this year.

I’m always a fan of experimenting with cocktail recipes so when thebar.com challenged me to recreate a cocktail recipe from one of my favourite films, my only issue was which one?

I ummed and ahhed about whether I should I go for a something like a White Russian from The Big Lebowski (one of my faves) or a more niche cocktail like the Orange Whip from The Blues Brothers. But I ended up settling on one of my favourites after watching La La Land and rekindling my love of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

The Old Fashioned is a cocktail I learned while I was over in the US visiting friends, my friend’s Dad introduced us to the perfect Old Fashioned and I’ve never looked back since. In Crazy, Stupid, Love an Old Fashioned is Ryan Gosling’s go to cocktail to impress Emma Stone (and whoever else ventures back to his apartment), so it makes sense to show you this recipe in preparation for the Oscars tonight. It’s also super easy to make!

Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe

Ingredients

50ml Scotch Whisky
1 dash Angostura Bitters
1 sugar cube
1 cherry (whichever kind you like)
1 slice of orange (or more if you fancy!)
Ice

Method

1. Place a sugar cube in a glass and add a dash of angostura bitters, leave to soak for a few seconds.

2. Muddle with a spoon until dissolved. Then tilt the glass to coat the sides with the sugar mixture.

3. Fill the glass with ice, a few cubes should do it.

4. Pour in the 50ml of Scotch Whisky, then garnish with a cherry and orange slice.
