Tweet Shops: Manchester Shopping Guide

Manchester has been my home for nearly five years now, the time has absolutely flown by and I still love the city as much as I did when I moved here. It has also give me plenty of time to discover my favourite places to shop! The Northern Quarter is one of my favourite places, it's one of the first places I fell in love with as a teenager, spending all of my time in Affleck's Palace with friends thinking we were so cool in our Soho jeans and brightly coloured hoodies (we were not). Even though I'm now a fully fledged adult (I have a little grey streak in my fringe and everything!) it's still full of places that make me happy.

I recently attended an event with Premier Inn and Propellernet where we were armed with Megan's shopping guide and vouchers to treat ourselves after a good night sleep in the Premier Inn near Piccadilly.

Here a few of my favourite places to shop in Manchester with a few tips and tricks to help your visit to the city even better (read: more full of cake).

Manchester Craft & Design Centre - Oak Street, Northern Quarter

This is hands down one of my favourite places to shop in Manchester, it's a not for profit social enterprise that houses 18 studios for up and coming artists and designers to work in and sell their products. It's a great place for gifts and handmade jewellery, I pop in every few months to update my jewellery collection but more frequently for lovely cards and gifts. You can see two of the rings I've purchased from the Craft & Design Centre in this post, I love them!

Peckish? The cafe in the centre is full of amazing treats to fuel your shopping but Teacup and Home Sweet Home are also just around the corner.

Manchester Arndale - Market Street

Undoubtedly the centre of shopping in Manchester, the Arndale is situated slap bang in the middle of Market Street, the main high street in the city centre. It's full of all the high street shops you would expect including Topshop, Next, H&M, Kurt Geiger and loads more. I was on the hunt for a winter coat to spend my vouchers on, I'd nearly given up after visiting my go to shops but I accidentally found the perfect one on my way out of the Arndale in BHS, you can see it in this post.

Peckish? The food court in the market on the far side of the Arndale (nearest to the Northern Quarter) is full of interesting and delicious food,  you can get pretty much whatever you fancy from Chinese takeaway to Oreo milkshakes.

Magma - Oldham Street

Magma made it onto Megan's list too and rightly so, it is a mecca for anyone who loves magazines. It has a ridiculously wide range of magazines and books, all in the creative realm. This is the perfect place for little Christmas gifts with a bit of personality.

Peckish? Well, you're in luck! Fig + Sparrow is just next door and is an adorable cafe with a horde of cute cards and trinkets for you to shop while you sip.

Fred Aldous - Lever Street

I could honestly spend hours in Fred Aldous, it's an emporium of all things craft and design. The top floor (on street level) is full of cards, gifts, stationery and interesting things, but if you head downstairs, there is everything you need to make anything you want. Literally, anything. Whether you just want some new felt tips or fancy trying a spot of laser cutting, Fred Aldous has it all and there's plenty of clever people on hand to help you get your head round craft. There are also regular craft classes in the studio on the bottom floor, which you can find out more about in store, I really want to go to brush up on my sewing skills!

Peckish? Ooh, you're in for a treat, there are plenty of great places near Fred Aldous. A few of my favourite include Bakerie for freshly baked bread and a wine vending machine, Rosylees for a Sunday Roast and Slice for pizza.

I never really stay in the city centre, it seems a bit silly when I only live a few miles away, but it was such a treat to stay in (short) walking distance of the shops and in such a comfy bed at the Premier Inn, I might treat myself to another shopping weekend soon!
