Spotlight on Salford: Wicked at The Lowry and Pokusevski's Deli
Every now and then myself and The Man like to stay local and visit places in Salford instead of heading into Manchester, we've lived here for the past 4 years (only in the same house for the last two!) and in that time it has changed so much, there has been a lot of money invested in the area not to mention the BBC and ITV moving into Media City in recent years. To put it in perspective, we even have a Nando's now...
Even so, I seldom mention my favourite places in Salford so I thought I'd start a regular feature focusing on some areas that you should definitely check out if you're in the area. To start with, I thought I'd take you with us on one of our recent date nights!
We started with dinner at Pokusevski's, an independent delicatessen based in the heart of Media City. Not only is it a lovely little place to be, the food as also incredible. With locally sourced, organic ingredients and global influences including Spanish, Jewish and English, the menu is quite unique and caters to most tastes because of it! I'd so recommend it for a lunch, pre-theatre dinner or if you're just in the area and fancy a slice of homemade cake!
After dinner we moved on to the main event, Wicked at The Lowry! I'd heard SO many good things about Wicked I immediately said yes to attending the press show a couple of days into the tour, I'm not usually a big fan of musicals but this year I'm racking them up nicely with The Book of Mormon in London a couple of months ago.
For someone who isn't a musical fan, I was instantly caught up in the theatre of it all, it usually takes me a while to forget about the actual people and focus on the characters but the actresses and actors in Wicked were so talented that I believed their every word. Every person in the performance gave it their all (I dread to think what would happen if one of them had to do a show hungover!) joining forces to put on a great show. By far my favourite part were the sets, they were incredible, from the animatronic dragon at the top of the stage to the illusion of rain with clever lighting, it re-ignited my love of the theatre.
I don't think I'd quite be able to rack up as many views as some of my musical loving friends but it has opened my eyes to musicals, I'd thoroughly recommend for anyone that loves musicals and wants to see West End shows without having to head to London!
Wicked is showing at The Lowry in Salford until the 25th of July, you can pick up tickets here but hurry, they're selling out fast!
