Virva Launo

I first fell in love with Virva Launo when I saw her work in The Nude Issue of Fashion156.com back in the days before their revamp so ignore the crazy layout problems... The first image is from the Nude Issue shoot and I do still love it. Actually, while we're on the subject, the new issue of Fashion156 came out today so go check that out. I especially love the F156 film, watch it here.

So back to Virva Launo, her pieces are not only aesthetically pleasing with lovely, clean lines and a superb colour palette, they also have hidden talents. The leather has been treated in a special way so as the bag gets older and has had more sunlight on it, it will begin to tan like our skin, revealing a beautiful pattern. I love this idea, it means that pieces have hidden depths and will keep on changing with age. Rather a lovely idea don't you agree?

I've also added in a few of her design sketches as I thought they were beautiful. Also, you're able to see the development process from accordions to the finished product.

Virva Launo is now part of the Marimekko group and has produced some amazingly vibrant pieces so I suggest you check those out too!

Don't forget, when I reach 200 followers I'm going to do a little giveaway so follow, follow, follow!

  31. Gosh, within only a couple of months, your following has become massive! I can really see this blog becoming big Clare, and it makes me so pleased to see it!

Again, a really brilliant post. That slim bag with the pop of green is gorgeous. The idea of the leather tanning and aging to create patterns is so romantic... I love things like that. They just make the garment feel so much more special.
