Gaga for Holly Russell

Please excuse the pun, I couldn't help myself! Holly Russell is an extraordinarily talented, young designer who only just graduated with  a BA in fashion design from Manchester Metropolitan University. Even though she's a relative newbie to fashion her clothes have already been flown around the World with Lady Gaga on her tour and Holly is working alongside Gareth Pugh as we speak.

Her work is breathtakingly beautiful and painstakingly created, the iridescent shoulder pieces are tiny beetle wings sewn on by hand one at a time. The overall effect is most definitely worth it and the pieces are astounding. The contrast between the beetle wings and the hair is a welcome one, I find mixtures of texture really interesting and love the exploration of different materials within fashion.

I adore this collection and the way it has been styled for this shoot, what do you think?

Holly's website is being built at the moment but there is more info and images on her ftape profile.

  2. Wow, gorgeous! I adore the shot with the blue dress! It is stunning.

The beetle wings are such a briliant update on the whole sequins/statement shoulder trend. Something the highstreet will find it impossible to copy...

    Great post!

  3. Goodness, it's hard to believe she only just graduated! Her work is incredible. I am a big fan of digital prints, so I love that first dress. And of course, the beetle wing embellishment is incredible! They have such an interesting texture, and the way they glimmer is beautiful. They must be so fragile!
    Absolutely stunning.

  5. WOW!!Amazing, the shoulders/arms are so nice on that second to last photos, in contrast to the plaint top. I bet it would be so special to own a piece knowing how much work went into it!X

  6. that iridescent effect is mind-blowing, and beetle wings?! it's almost as if people have become bored of the fur debate (Chanel are all about the fake fur this season, i don't imagine many people want to be seen in the real thing anymore) and have moved onto far more intricate and complex, debatable animal/insect paraphernalia! still, looks sublime. i've never seen shoulders quite like this before.

in response to your (brilliantly helpful!) comment about jeffrey campbell, etc, i got an out-of-the-blue email from them today and so am just writing a related post now, if you want the news hot off the press (haha, hardly, the press release was dated wednesday and today is friday, so with me things come lukewarm, i think!) hope you had fun last night!
