Films I need

I keep meaning to buy loads of films but then completely forget which ones I want, so i'm going to make a list of which ones I need to acquire to remind myself. Some of them I have but need on DVD, I like videos they remind me of nice times.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit
The Red Shoes
What to do in Case of Fire
The czech version of Alice in Wonderland
Meet the Feebles
Lars and the Real Girl
Silence of the Lambs
Snuff Box
Me, You and Everyone we know
Art School Confidential
Look Around You
La Haine
Withnail and I
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Groundhog day

I'm sure there are more, I'll update if I think of anymore. I'm sleepy so I shall partake in some snooze, goodnight.

Damir Doma

Sometimes I would like to be a man, I'd like to see what it's like to have a beard, say 'I haven't laughed that hard since I was a little girl' with it actually being funny and so I could wear Croatian designer Damir Doma's creations.
Some of his A/W '09 collection could easily be unisex, for example the necklace below is almost more feminine, but other aspects are strictly butch.

His low boots, available from Oki-ni, are delicious. The supple, treated brown leather compliments the vintage design and odd elements, such as the pull tag at the bottom of the boot rather than at the top, add interest. I also love the way the boots look undone, I'd where them like that and pair them with a beard...

His website is a little bit exciting, I suggest you experience it for yourself.

Me and Henry went on a little adventure to visit abandoned houses to use for a shoot for my new project (and for Henry's portfolio) and took a few test shots to check lighting, positioning and just have a gander at the location really. The place we ended up in was such a find, so many things in one place. There's a little broken house, lakes and what looks like a secret bunker... I like it lots.
I do look massively out of proportion on most of these, it's because Henry was using a huge, wide angled lens not because I'm secretly a Bratz doll.

Toronto Fashion Week has just finished and it seemed to be quite a lot of the same. The same colours and shapes for the most part. There were some standout designers such as Joeffer Caoc who created simple, elegant designs. However, it was the students from Ryerson University that really caught my eye. 6 graduates were chosen to show their A/W collections.
The two designers that stood out to me were Kat Marks and Heidi Ackerman.

Heidi Ackerman specialises in innovative knitwear made from sustainable materials. Unlike others, Heidi has kept the fashion forward, highly creative look instead of just chucking in anything made from Hemp. I would love to have one of her jumper/dress things and never take it off.

Kat Marks is just an a different level though, with massive shoulder embellishments, pvc and what can only be described as sculpture. They stood, literally, head and shoulders above the rest. Her designs are just delightful in a bondage kind of a way.
For more information about Kat Marks, visit her website

Which is better?

I've been working on some illustrations for Drunken Werewolf to go with an article about The Jealous Girlfriends, a rather good band, but have two options and a hatred for decision making. They need some photoshopping before being sent off obviously.

The cartoon-y version?

Or the slightly less cartoon-y version?

I have spent my day thus far wandering around our little market town in the sun with my best friend Matt, then we had the brilliant idea of getting a barbecue and fancy burgers. So we lay in the sun in my garden (the photo above is what i could see whilst lying) with nice drinks and yummy burgers, good times. I like summer. Lots. Apologies for the quality of the photos, my phone's not the best and neither are our faces, I don't think there's one nice photo of us ever. We're growing up though, it's scary.

On sunday, after a little celebration of my mother, me and Henry, who I haven't spoken to since primary school, are going to scout some locations for a photo shoot for my new uni project. We're going to have a little mess around with lighting and that, should be lots of fun!

Oh and...

...I also want this.

JC/DC Michael Jackson dress from his show at Paris Fashion Week.

Wake up call

I really need to stop letting my nerves get the better of me. But, they have been ignored and I start working at Fashion156 in May, i'm very excited but scared.

I wasn't feeling too great about it all, due to a rather nervy, disappointing interview, so cheered myself up with a trip to Borders and some Rolos. Magazines are so much more accessible in London, for example, they sell Man About Town and Dazed and Confused at newspaper stands. Preston doesn't have this luxury sadly.

After collecting a little bounty of glossies I wandered around Islington in the sun for a little while and then made my way back to Preston. I read every word of Wonderland on the way home and one tiny article made me do a little smile after feeling quite bad about myself for the hours after the interview. The article was about the release of House of Flora's, owned by Flora McLean, first foray into dress design. Already an established brand specialising in modernist hats and accessories, featured in such magazines as Vogue and Wonderland and adorned the models for Givenchy runway shows. I didn't smile just at the introduction of dresses, it was because Flora's plan is to make one dress per season until she is 60. I think this is a very relaxed, unique and lovely way to approach fashion.

Information on House of Flora can be found here and dress No.2 for A/W '09 can be seen in this video created by Justin Anderson, there's also information about House of Flora on there which is much better than my ramblings.

I don't like doing image-less posts so here is an image of the new collaboration between Nike and Liberty. This is the second collaborative shoe Nike and Liberty have done, this time it's called 'The Blazer' and uses floral fabric swatches and quilting. Have a looky here for more info.
We got a new brief today to create a collaborative 'sneaker' using a person and brand of our choice, so this is quite fitting. Plus, I want some.

Tweet twitter

I have succumbed and got myself a twitter. It's quite apt seeing as i tweet over here and i now tweet over there.

I'm in the middle of trying to decide what to wear tomorrow, I have an informal interview at Fashion156, I think i'll just wear black and hope for the best. My head really hurts on one side so I don't want to be trying on lots of things, i'd rather sit in bed reading blogs and magazines. I want some hot chocolate, mmmm, don't want to get up though.

I've just been sent some illustration work to do by Drunken Werewolf so that'll take my mind off it. I've just listened to them, only 'There's something in the water' all the way through, and they're rather good.

I need a very early night tonight as I keep going to bed at silly o clock and tomorrow i need to wake up at silly o clock. Boo. But i'm off to the bright lights, big city for a little chat with Fashion156 so that's nice.

I got some yellow doc martins from Oxfam vintage. I am smitten with them, i don't care if they look silly, I want to wear them always. Apologies for the bad picture.

We are massive, indie, sore thumbs

Me and my housemate, also called Clare, went on a mini adventure to Lancaster tonight to see our friend Russ's band play. They are scary but good. We got absolutely crushed. We also met up with my friend from sixth form, Nicky, who I haven't seen for an age and went for a lovely meal. Good times had all round apart from my poor, bruised foot...

I've just been getting my portfolio together, it's a bit last minute and shoddy but I've got a tutorial on wednesday so I have to have it looking presentable at least. Portfolios cause stress if you weren't aware, stay away from compiling one unless you have to, or have a pile of really good work. In that case, well done you.

As I was doing it, I found some old work from last year so thought it might like an internet airing.

An underwater shoot I did in a tiny pool 10 minutes out of Preston. Can you see the obvious inspiration? Clue: It's a couple of posts down...
